Reflecting on our Growth

Our company hit a significant milestone recently. We’re all grown up, at age twenty one. Just like a 21-year-old, our company has gone through growth spurts, and perhaps sometimes an awkward stage. And like a person, we have grown with knowledge and experience every year.

Our 21st birthday is a sentimental one, full of celebration and reflection surrounding this coming of age milestone.

As we reflect, we’re proud that we’ve worked hard to develop solid, mature relationships because of trust and respect. Clients return for multiple placements and with each subsequent placement, we gain a better understanding of their unique culture fit.

We are so very thankful for so many loyal clients where we have developed a successful relationship that translates into placing all their new hires. When facilitating a candidate and company match, we always hope to get the fit right for our client but also help our candidates set off on a fulfilling career path. When we continue to work with these organizations year after year, we get to watch our former candidates progress within these organizations, which ends up being very fulfilling for us.

We often hear about all the great people our candidates were introduced to during the interviews we arrange; we love it when our clients showcase their employees, and ultimately their culture, during the interview process. We love it, even more, when we hear that our placements are now the employees interviewing new potential talent and helping to choose their next best hire.

We stay close to our clients and candidates, selfishly maybe – so we get to experience all these fulfilling moments… but also because as we mature, and our clients grow over time, our working relationship becomes easier. We become better at anticipating needs and recognizing good fit.

When we have a great interview at McNak, the team discusses where that person would fit best. Of course, we have open roles and immediate recruitment needs that we are working hard to fill… but, we also have the ability to imagine that person working for a specific client and fitting in great! We give that hiring manager a call, just in case they are thinking of growing the team anytime soon. This might be the same client who calls us in November to let us know they might be hiring in March, just so we can keep our eyes open in the meantime. Building on each year of partnership, with more knowledge, comes more success, and that is something to celebrate!

Just like a 21-year-old, we reflect on how far we’ve come, but also look forward to continuing to learn and grow. Saying this, maybe this milestone is more similar to a couple celebrating their 21st Anniversary? Our partnerships with clients are built on trust, growing from added knowledge and experiences year after year; we are better together, and it gets better with every year.

Staffing for Canada Week

Last week was Staffing for Canada Week.  The annual event is celebrated by members of the Association of Canadian Search, Employment and Staffing Services to acknowledge the more than 400,000 people who are employed in the staffing profession in Canada. ACSESS members represent 85 percent of the staffing volume in Canada.

Our team celebrated with a take out picnic lunch in a park near our Yaletown neighbourhood, then a nice walk along the seawall back to the office. We all enjoyed this fun way to celebrate with our great team of recruiters and staff.

Happy 20th Birthday McNeill Nakamoto!

It was on a Monday in September 1996 when McNeill Nakamoto Recruitment Group was founded by Sarah McNeill and Cheryl Nakamoto.

“Sarah and I wanted to create a different kind of recruitment company that personalized the recruitment process for both our clients and candidates,” says Cheryl Nakamoto, “and we plan to continue striving to be the most customer focused staffing and recruitment company.”Happy Birthday McNak

Staffing for Canada Week

Found it!

This week is Staffing for Canada Week.

Each year during the first week of June, members and chapters of the Association of Canadian Search, Employment & Staffing Services (ACSESS) acknowledge the outstanding contributions of the many Canadians employed through staffing firms. Letters from the Prime Minister of Canada and Provincial Premiers recognize the key role these individuals play in our country’s continued economic growth and prosperity.

Canadian staffing firms provide a key service to businesses and offer a broad range of career planning and employment opportunities for over 500,000 Canadians every business day. ACSESS members take pleasure in this annual opportunity to celebrate and thank its employees while at the same time benefiting many charities through industry events.

Sweet Sixteen

On the 23rd of September 1996, Sarah McNeill and Cheryl Nakamoto founded McNeill Nakamoto Recruitment Group, affectionately known as McNak. Recently, I met with Sarah and Cheryl separately to ask about the road they have traveled these past 16 years. Interesting how in sync these two are.

Congratulations on 16 successful years. How does it feel?

Sarah:  I think I love McNak more with every passing year. It truly only gets better!

Cheryl:  Pretty incredible given most partnerships don’t endure the test of time.  We have been able to create a strong brand and have lots of fun doing it!

What was your vision for McNak when you started in September 1996?

Sarah: To stand out in the vast sea of staffing agencies and provide the best staffing experiences for our customers.

Cheryl:  To be a great recruitment firm in terms of getting the RIGHT FIT from the onset. Also, an agency that cares equally about exceeding the expectations of our clients as well as the candidates. Having been a candidate at one point I know the struggles of looking for work and having some compassion – care to treat them with respect was top on my list.

Regarding business partnership, how do you ‘make it work’?

Sarah:  Cheryl and I are very different people with complimentary skill sets. We make a perfect yin/yang partnership. And we share a love for fun and for seeing the ‘glass half full’.

Cheryl: Really listening to each other and playing to each others’ strengths then trusting the other to make the right choices when implementing decisions that were made jointly.  Not acting unilaterally without consideration for the other.

You are very successful entrepreneurs. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in business now?

Sarah:  It’s a shark tank out there. Put your best ideas forward and hire the best people to execute your plan.

Cheryl:  Have passion for what you are wanting to accomplish otherwise it becomes too difficult to push through those tough times.  You need to know it’s going to be hard work and some long hours and seek out help in areas where you know you need direction.

Why is Corporate Culture important?

Sarah:  Without corporate culture the business is just a machine with no soul. The best employees want to be a more of something greater than just the product or service.  We wanted to create even just 10% of what the best brands have with their teams in terms of corporate culture.

Cheryl: Corporate culture is so important in that is defines the company.  With the enormous growth around using social media, corporate culture is even more important now.  People can get a sense of your culture and share this information with others, make opinions quickly and you are even more “exposed” to the public.  Brand and corporate culture are so closely tied together.  If you build a strong corporate culture then it can attract and help to retain top talent!

How do you make it FUN to work at McNak?

Sarah:  We embrace our inner quirks and let others do the same. It’s never ‘just another day’ at the office.

Cheryl:  We laugh at least 10 times a day…I just laughed at a joke right now with my team!  We harness and embrace all our inner quirks and it makes it a fun place to work!

What’s next for McNak?

Sarah:  To always remain true to our original McNak vision and to keep having fun!

Cheryl: Excited about building in our 2 areas of expertise- Finance and Real Estate and a new partnership formed that will allow us to offer Global Recruitment to our clients.
